Seeing the Coaching Parade

A Talk by Julie Kuzma Instructional Facilitator of Technology, Loudoun County Public Schools

Who doesn’t love a parade?! Let’s bring the excitement of the floats to your classroom. During this session, attendees will learn how teachers and coaches combined their efforts to lead students to the creation of a Celebrate VA robotic parade (even better than the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade) exemplifying our historical and beautiful state of Virginia. Using research, mathematical skills, engineering, language arts, and related arts, 4th grade students designed floats that told the story of our home state using only sculptures built by a myriad of craft items that traveled by robot. This project was more than a parade. Joining in the process was: coaching techniques, classroom teachers, Special Ed Teachers, technology coaches and instructional facilitators who teamed up to take an ordinary lesson of naming geographical features, regions and famous Americans and dove deeper to empower teachers to facilitate and students to push themselves beyond limits. A sample of the project can be found here: Celebrate VA Parade (bit.ly/seathecoachparade)
