Establishing a culture of innovation: Building a Lifelong Love of STEM in Our Youngest Learners

A Talk by Brittney Tarr (Teacher, Illinois State University Laboratory Schools)

About this Talk

Admit it, sometimes the idea of teaching our youngest learners important problem solving skills like coding, circuitry, structural engineering or anything using the design process can feel a bit daunting. After all, these young learners are still figuring out how to "do school" while learning how to read and perform basic arithmetic, and now you're being asked to help them learn to engineer? It's normal to feel overwhelmed and like you aren't sure where to start. The good news is that it takes less work than you think to establish classroom routines and practices that promote a lifelong love of all things STEM in all learners. Come learn about ways that you can focus your attention on the most essential problem solving skills, create a strong culture of innovation, all while capitalizing on the benefits of play-based learning!
